What Underlayment Means
Underlayment is a layer installed between the subfloor and finished flooring to meet product requirements or improve sound, comfort, support, or moisture management.
Where It Is Commonly Used
It is used beneath many floating floors and may also be part of tile, resilient, or specialty flooring systems. Some products include attached pad and prohibit additional underlayment.

The correct underlayment can improve acoustics, support the locking system, reduce minor surface noise, and help meet manufacturer or building requirements.
Important Considerations
Underlayment cannot correct an uneven or damaged subfloor. Thickness, density, vapor control, product compatibility, and warranty requirements must be checked before installation.
